Shinguards - How important are they?
Shinguards are required to protect you from serious (or permanent) leg injury. Referee's are instructed not to allow a player to play with inadequate protection. (See sizing chart below) Of course, no shinguard can guarantee you won't get bruises, bumps or a broken leg however; a properly fitted shinguard will provide greater security and reduce the risk of suffering serious or permanent damage. The last time you bumped your shin on a coffee table, chances are, you probably deserved a yellow card for your expression of displeasure. Now, imagine getting whacked in the leg with a baseball bat, and you get a sense of the importance of properly fitted shinguards. It's well worth a few extra dollars, to ensure the safety of your children ... not to mention the savings from avoiding an ambulance ride. Kids think the tiny little shinguards make them look cool and play better ... that is, until they're rolling on the ground with a fractured or broken leg. Mini Shinguards are actually not allowed and manufacturers shouldn't even be selling them. Unfortunately, they are popular, creating a market for them to capitalize on. (I'll probably get sued for saying it but, the kids safety is far more important than being "Politically Correct") Protect your kids ... I've seen it too many times and prefer not to see it again ... ever!!! For that reason, we are providing the following "Shinguard Sizing Guidelines", cause your kids are worth it! To find the correct size, measure from your ankle to the bottom of your knee in inches, then multiply that number by .75.
This means your shinguards will cover 75%, not 100% of your shin. Why? Shinguards that are too big will be bulky and restrict mobility. Another method of sizing is to get senior or large shinguards if you are taller than 5'4", and either medium or junior shinguards if you are shorter than 5'4".
As a shin guard increases in size, it becomes longer and wider to accommodate larger leg diameters. Shin guards should fit from a couple inches below the knee to just above the bend of your ankle when you flex upward.
